Law Enforcement Agencies from as far away as San Diego join in funeral precession
on Hwy.101 near Atascadeo, Ca. for fallen CHP officer Brett Oswald Friday, July 2,
as they head towards the Paso Robles Fair Grounds for Oswald s memorial service.


‘Ride For Life,’ at the 2009 Amgen Cancer Awareness Fundraising bicycle race, hundreds of riders make

In April of 1987, Richard captured this rare and eerie photo of convicted rapist Lawrence Singleton in an exclusive jail house interview just
prior to his controversial release from the California Men’s Colony State Prison in San Luis Obispo. Singleton spent years in jail, following
his conviction in the early 1980’s, for the rape of a teenage girl, whose arms he brutally hacked off during the commission of his crime. He
was also accused or convicted in other rapes and killings. This photo was released world-wide by UPI. The day before Singleton was
released. A short time after being released he was back in prison, where he later died in custody.

In 1981 at Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant in San Luis Obispo County, Sheriff’s Deputies arrest protestors, at this
controversial power source on the coast in Avila Beach, as it prepares to go ‘on-line.’ Bastian took this photo at the
entrance gate, to the actual facility while covering the event for United Press International using a Nikon SLR Camera,
the classic news camera of the era and 400asa‘black-and-white film.

Other photos from the protests show National Guard soldiers and Sheriff’s Deputies riding
on a ‘troop-carrier’, as protesters scramble to get out of the way during the protest.

‘Crash-and-Burn,’ . This deadly accident took place in 1982, near Arroyo Grande, Ca. on one of San Luis Obispo’s County’s
back-roads. This fearful and fiery road wreck, is one of hundreds Bastian shot during his career as chief photographer and picture/editor.
